February 8 is the founding anniversary of the Korean People’s Army in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Whenever they greet the day, the Korean people recollect the history of the heroic KPA which has followed the ever-victorious road under the leadership of the peerlessly illustrious commanders generation after generation.

In the early years when he embarked on the road of the revolution, President Kim Il Sung clarified the immutable truth that the arms are the life of the nation and the victory of the revolution, started the anti-Japanese war with the two pistols inherited from his father Kim Hyong Jik and defeated the Japanese imperialists armed to the teeth and achieved the great cause of liberating Korea on August 15, 1945.

After liberation, he put forward the original idea of building a regular army with sons and daughters of working people with the anti-Japanese revolutionary fighters as its backbone, and wisely led the work to this end. As a result, on February 8, Juche 37 (1948), he declared to the world the founding of the KPA, the first regular revolutionary armed force in the history of the Korean nation spanning 5 000 years.

The young KPA defeated the allied imperialist forces led by the US imperialists, who provoked the Korean war (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953) while boasting of being the “strongest” in the world, and recorded a history of great victory in the war.

Kim Il Sung directed primary efforts to strengthening the revolutionary armed forces in each period and at every stage of the developing revolution so as to firmly guarantee the victorious advance of the revolution and construction by force of arms.

Chairman Kim Jong Il, who set it as his lifelong mission to carry forward and accomplish the revolutionary cause of Juche pioneered by Kim Il Sung, ushered in a new era of the development of the revolutionary armed forces by dint of his outstanding art of command and steel-strong courage.

In particular, when the country was at a crossroads of life and death in the 1990s, he gave priority to beefing up the military strength with an iron will that peace, happy life of the people and victory of socialism are guaranteed by the force of the People’s Army, with the result that socialism was firmly defended and a solid springboard for building a powerful country provided.

Today the KPA is ushering in the heyday of its development under the leadership of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un.

He made sure that the KPA bolstered up its self-defensive strength to the highest level so that no forces dare to infringe upon the sovereignty of the state and the dignity of its people. As a result, it has grown to be the backbone of national defence and the strong pillar for defending peace with powerful military capabilities to react to any warfare on the ground, at sea and in the air and beyond.

Take as an example the military parades held last year in celebration of the 75th founding anniversary of the KPA and the 70th anniversary of the victory in the Fatherland Liberation War.

Columns of military units of all services and arms, those of artillerymen or the primary service of the KPA, those of tactical and long-range cruise missile units which are on standby for fire, those of the DPRK’s strategic weapons, etc. marched past the square in a fine array.

The KPA is still adding brilliance to its precious honour and traditions on the road of defending the country and the system.
