International Day of Older Persons

  The 45th UN General Assembly session held in 1990 designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons and decided to raise international awareness on the protection of older persons on this occasion.

Every year, the UN advances a commemorative theme in conformity with the demand of the elderly and actual situation and organizes various events.

The DPRK conducts the work of protecting the elderly as a nationwide and social work.

Decades ago, it promulgated the “Socialist Constitution of the DPRK” and the “DPRK Law on Public Health” specifying that the living and health of the elderly should be looked after in a responsible manner.

Besides, it organized the Central Committee of the Korean Federation for the Care of the Aged and adopted the “Law of the DPRK on the Care of the Elderly” to provide a legal guarantee for thoroughly ensuring their rights and interests and creating better living conditions for them.

Under the benefits of the policy on the protection of the aged, sanatoriums for war veterans and old people’s homes have been built in different parts of the country and the aged lead a stable and happy life enjoying genuine rights and interests under the care of the state. Therefore, the number of centenarians is on the increase.

The family and social climate of respecting the aged as revolutionary forerunners, not merely senior citizens, has been established. Power organs pay deep attention to protecting the aged and the sectors of commerce, welfare service and transport give preferential treatment to the aged including war veterans and meritorious persons.

Congratulatory meetings, art performances and colourful sports games are organized every year to mark the International Day of Older Persons.

The DPRK is also conducting exchanges and cooperation with various countries and international organizations to develop the work for the protection of the aged.
